Smoky Quartz is a silicon dioxide mineral. This natural compound, silicon (si) and oxygen (O2), are two of the earth’s most abundant materials. A major part of the earth’s crust contains silicate minerals. Quartz is formed in igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary processes. Smoky Quartz is produced when surrounding rock emits natural radiation. The exposure to radiation produces aluminum within the Quartz, giving Smoky Quartz its grey, brown, or black colors. Oxygen is an essential for life to exist. Silicon is a key ingredient that impacts our daily lives. It is used in bricks, glass, steel, computers and more. It is also a beneficial element inside plants that promotes proper plant functioning. Within the human body, the element aluminum protects the body by promoting alkaline metabolic processes. Disease cannot live in an alkaline state. It also helps normalize the nervous system and overcome states of weakness.
Smoky Quartz gets its name for its brown, gray, and black colors. Originally it was referred to as Cairngorm because it was first discovered in the Cairn Gorm Mountains in Scotland as early as 300 BC. The Scottish cultures used Smoky Quartz in jewelry, as brooches on kilts. They also used Smoky Quartz blades as concealed weapons for protection. Today, it is the native gem of Scotland. Across Germany, Switzerland, and Austria, crosses made of Smoky Quartz were placed on bedroom walls for protection. The crosses were to protect from bad luck and evil in both the physical and etheric worlds. In Cherokee traditions and Shamanism, Smoky Quartz was also used to protection from evil etheric worlds. During times of pain and loss, the Romans used Smoky Quartz to overcome.
