Amethyst is a stone of spiritual protection and purification. Amethyst stimulates the Crown Chakra and activates the Higher Mind, thus making it a powerful companion for meditation and for entering into higher states of consciousness. It assists in releasing old habits and can help curb the tendency to over-indulgences and addictions. Amethyst clears one’s energy field, especially of negativity and ethereal attachments. The “Violet Flame” protects one from being psychically attacked and it helps to rid karmic baggage. For those that feel they don't have a native earth place, Amethyst is a great stone to work with. Also, Amethyst creates a “bubble of light” or shield of protection that prevents negativity from coming through. It stimulates communication and connection to spiritual realms, especially to guides and guardian Angels. Additionally, it enhances intuitive and psychic abilities.
Chemical Formula: SiO2
Amethyst is a member of the Quartz family and is a silicon dioxide mineral. This natural compound, silicon (Si) and oxygen (O2), are two of the earth’s most abundant materials. A major part of the earth’s crust contains silicate minerals. Quartz is formed in igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary processes. Amethyst is produced when surrounding rock emits natural radiation. The exposure to radiation produces trace amounts of iron and aluminum within the Quartz, giving Amethyst its purple color. Iron is a vital element for the human body and makes metabolism possible. Iron is present in red blood cells. Without healthy red blood cells, we can’t get enough oxygen and become fatigued. Aluminum protects the body by promoting alkaline metabolic processes. Disease cannot live in an alkaline state. It also helps normalize the nervous system and overcome states of weakness.
The name Amethyst is derived from the Greek word “Amethustos” meaning “sober.” Ancient cultures said that Amethyst would prevent intoxication and settle those who were drunk, angry, or frustrated. Records indicate people using this stone as early as 25,000 B.C. In Ancient Egypt, the Amethyst was used for adornment. It is a stone of royalty and can be found in the crowns, scepters and rings of kings and bishops. Egyptians also believed that it protected the wearer from sorcery and was a natural cure for gout. Some cultures believed Amethyst was a symbol for wisdom in life and also represented pure intellect.
