Chemical Formula: SiO2
Obsidian is a non-crystallized silicon dioxide igneous rock that forms when molten rock cools so quickly that atoms cannot formulate a crystal structure. The molten rock is rich in silica and typically solidifies above earth’s surface. The cooling process that creates obsidian can be along edges of lava flow, where lava contacts water, around a volcanic dome, or along a sill. Snowflake Obsidian is created over time when various parts of an Obsidian rock crystallize. This process forms white or grey minerals called cristobalite, which are similar to quartz. Cristobalite produces patterns within the Obsidian that look like snowflakes. Silicon (Si) and oxygen (O2), are two of the earth’s most abundant materials. Oxygen is an essential for life to exist. Silicon is a key ingredient that impacts our daily lives. It is used in bricks, glass, steel, computers and more. It is also a beneficial element inside plants that promotes proper plant functioning.
Dating back to the Stone Age, humans carved and used Obsidian as tools. Some of the tools included: arrowheads, blades, and spears. In some ancient sites there is enough evidence of Obsidian scrapings to suggest people labored away producing Obsidian tools. Thus, this stone may have been a part of the very first manufacturing industry. As a handy tool of ancient civilizations, there is also evidence that people traded and transported Obsidian over thousands of miles. Obsidian blades are used today in surgeries. The blades are so thin and sharp that they exceed the powers of surgical steel.
