Howlite is a calcium borosilicate hydroxide. It is formed near areas of evaporated lake water or seawater and in sedimentary clay. In the human body, the element calcium is essential for human life and makes up bones and teeth. It is also important for relaying messages through the nervous. Boron prevents bone demineralizing and calcium decay. Boron builds and strengthens muscles. Silicate maintains healthy bones, hair, skin, and nails. In its natural state, Howlite is shaped like cauliflower. It is white and has black, brown or grey intersecting veins throughout it.
Howlite got its name in the 19th century by its discoverer, a Canadian Geologist, named Henry How. Native Americans called Howlite “the buffalo sacred stone” or the “white buffalo stone” because it was rare to their locations, just like the white buffalo. Howlite is often dyed to imitate other stones such as Turquoise and Lapis Lazuli.
