Hematite is an iron oxide, composed of iron and oxygen. Earth’s surface contains hematite on both the ocean floors and on the land. It can be formed via metamorphic, sedimentary, or igneous processes. Hematite leads to the creation of steel, which provides stability in buildings, roadways and railroads. Hematite is also used in radiation shielding, weapons, paints, and makeup. Typically, these rocks will be a grey metallic color and in powder form or when infused with other minerals, it is a rich rusty red color. The planet Mars, gets its red color because of the abundance of Hematite. Iron and oxygen are both vital elements for the human body. Iron makes metabolism possible and it is present in red blood cells. Without healthy red blood cells, we can’t get enough oxygen and therefore, become fatigued. Oxygen is an essential for life to exist.
The name Hematite derives from the Greek word haima, which means blood. Rumor says that Hematite formed on battlegrounds where soldiers lost blood and were injured. In Egypt and Mesopotamia, Hematite was used to heal wounds where there was an overabundance or restriction of blood flow. Egyptians also put Hematite inside tombs. In the Middle Ages, Hematite was called bloodstone. Over 40,000 years ago, Hematite was found as the paint for ancient cave paintings.
