Petrified Wood is the wood of ancient trees, dating back 100-225 million years ago. It formed when trees were buried and protected from decay. Some of these trees were up to 200 feet tall and 9 feet in diameter. When they fell, broken branches were buried by sediments. Then groundwater flowed through and replaced the original wood with another mineral, typically silicon dioxide materials. Many times the crystallized wood will be made of Quartz or Agate. As each tree is different, so are many of the shapes, sizes, and color of Petrified Wood.
Petrified Wood come from the Greek root, petro, meaning wood turned into stone. Native American medicine men carried Petrified Wood to ward off injuries and infections. Arrowheads were also made out of Petrified Wood.
